WELCOME TO THE Y
The YMCA was founded in London, England, in 1844 by George Williams and some friends who lived and worked as clerks in a drapery, a forerunner of dry goods and department stores. Their goal was to help young men like themselves find God. The first members were evangelical Protestants who prayed and studied the Bible as an alternative to vice.
Today, the Y engages more than 10,000 neighborhoods across the U.S. As the nation’s leading nonprofit committed to helping people and communities to learn, grow and thrive, our contributions are both far-reaching and intimate—from influencing our nation’s culture during times of profound social change to the individual support we provide an adult learning to read.
By nurturing the potential of every child and teen, improving the nation’s health and well-being, and supporting and serving our neighbors, the Y ensures that everyone has the opportunity to become healthier, more confident, connected and secure
MAKING AN IMPACT
Helping Families in Need
"I want to thank the West End YMCA for everything they have done for our family throughout the years. My girls have been attending the after-school childcare program at the Elderberry site for about three years now. They provide transportation for my girls Elementary school to the center every day, outside activities, homework help, healthy snacks, and safe loving environment for my children. I'm a single mother of five and work a full-time job so finding affordable childcare that i could trust and also meet my needs was a must but it seemed unattainable. I applied for so many different childcare programs to help me with the cost of childcare due to me not receiving any type of assistance from the country and working full-time, i didn't qualify for anything. I was barely able to provide for my family and make ends meet but i was denied every time till I discovered the YMCA. They saw our need and made childcare attainable for my family. Without this program i have no idea what i would have done. My girls love going to the center and being part of the YMCA family there. I say "Family" because thats what they are. They have gone above and beyond for us in ways that words couldn't merely express. The compassion and love in them shows when you see them with the kids. The teachers there treat my girls as if they are their own and it shows. They provide resources and food for our family when money was tight and i didn't know how we were going to make it through the week. Without the YMCA, families like my own would have no place to turn for childcare."
